Different Drummer Pottery

The Studio of Terance Painter, Potter

New Work

Following are some images of my latest work while in development.  I am very excited with this new direction and hope to have some completed pieces available by February, 2011.

Drawing the trees

Here I am using a wooden stylus to sketch the trees into the side of the vase.

Note that I have already carved the tops of the trees into the rim.

Cutting out the trees

Next I begin to cut out and remove the spaces between the tree limbs.

This has to be done at the proper time.  If the clay is too wet, it will deform and if too dry it will crack.

Sculpting the trees

The last step is to take a small thin sculpting tool and remove enough clay so as to give the

trees a more life-like appearance.

The unglazed piece

This is the finished piece after sculpting.  It will now be left to dry slowly in the studio until bone dry.  After drying, I will bisque fire it and glaze as usual.  The final glazing scheme has yet to be worked out.  Come by the studio this spring or come back to the web site to see the final result
